Do they have a corporate wellness program?

If so, do you have any clue if it's run the correct way, or if it's just making you sick and fat?

In truth, there are few investments you can make that provide you with a higher return than a properly designed corporate wellness program, which can significantly reduce health care, disability and sick time expenses, and vastly improve employee productivity.

But it's gotta be run the right way.

Click here for a free white paper that shows you how and why to set up or take part in a corporate wellness program.

For today's post and more information on corporate wellness, I have an audio interview with US Corporate Wellness coach Sabryna Little, I ask the following questions:
-As some with "time in the trenches" what do you think is the biggest barrier or issue facing employees staying fit or well in the workplace?
-What practical ways can somebody use to stay fit while sitting at their desk on a typical workday?
-What kind of changes can a corporation make in a workplace to enable employees to stay more fit?
-What kind of simple ways can corporations get or enable employees to eat healthier?
-What would an ideal corporate wellness program look like?
How about you? Are you an employee who works at a corporation, or currently involved in any type of corporate wellness? What would you like to see added or changed to your corporate wellness plan?

Finally, to inquire directly about setting up a wellness program for your corporation with US Corporate Wellness, click here or e-mail: results@uscorporatewellness.com</itunes:summary>

dr. noakes says to drink when you're thirsty. makes sense. no reason to drink more than your body needs from a hydration standpoint. but what about reducing the risk of rhabdo and acute renal failure in endurance events? i'm an ultrarunner training for the leadville 100 this summer and i'd hate to wind up in the hospital because i didn't drink enough during my race. i can see a benefit in this situation to drink beyond my basic hydration needs.

~ In my response I mention the article "Athletes: Obey Your Thirst".

Angel says:
How do I know If I am working out enough or to much? Most times, when the workout video ends (The Daily Burn - where I found Ben) or I finish what I am doing, even though I am trembling, I want to do more. Is the trembling saying that's enough? Aren't I suppose to go till failure? Often if I work out that a.m. I want to work out again p.m. But I hear things about over training etc. I don't know where the line is. Should I go till I am a puddle in the floor or stop when the video stops or the written sets are done? How do other people judge?

~ In my response to Angel, I talk about Rest Wise.

Robert asks:
20 years ago, as a weightlifter, I herniated a disc and a pinched sciatic nerve resulted in severe leg nerve pain and foot drop. Surgery and PT got rid of the pain and most of the foot drop to the point where I can walk and run but not do too well moving my toes or lifting my foot against weights. Now as a triathlete, this limits me in two ways -- 1) in the affected leg my leg strength, particularly in the calf, ankle and foot, is weak. This affects balance and eg cycling power. 2) at higher speeds of running, my foot can’t keep up with my cadence and tires quickly. Beyond the normal strength training and PT exercises,</itunes:summary>

But he refused to listen, and instead used his knowledge of physics to train his body to run in a way that did not stress his joints. He is now both a triathlon coach as well as a wealth of knowledge of running drills.

In this audio interview with Graeme, you'll find out:

-Why most running drills are bad for you...

-The most common mistakes people make when performing running drills...

-Which running drills are best and how to do them correctly...

-Simple verbal cues to think about while you're running...

During the interview, Graeme discusses several videos. Here they are (more videos to come soon):

<itunes:summary>If you're wondering how to choose protein powder, this article will help you, because I'm going to teach you about 4 protein powder mistakes you probably don't know you're making. Be sure to download and listen to this protein audio interview too.

Let's start with a quick exercise:

Take a look at the ingredients of the protein powder above (called DEEP30). You can click on the image and read them, or just read below:
Goat Milk Protein, Goat Milk Mineral Whey (electrolytes), Guar/Xanthan Gum Blend, Goat Milk Cream, Stevia, Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086 (probiotics).
Got it?

OK, now check out the ingredients of probably one of the most popular protein powders on the face of the planet - EAS Myoplex:

Whey Protein Concentrate (Whey Protein Concentrate, Soy Lecithin), Corn Maltodextrin, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Salt, Whey Protein Isolate, Carageenan, Xanthan Gum, Acesulfame Potassium, and Sucralose.
The difference between these two proteins may seems slight at first, until you take a closer look and see:

1) You Can Make A Mistake With The Protein Source.

The whey protein concentrate source in EAS Myoplex is from cow protein, but the protein source from the DEEP30 is from goat protein. Compared to cow's milk, goat’s milk is less allergenic, naturally homogenized, easier to digest, lactose intolerant friendly, and biochemically and thermodynamically superior to cow’s milk.

I cover the issue with cow's protein in detail in the episode "Cow's Milk vs. Goat's Milk". In addition, compared to cow products, goat products contain less or none of the growth hormones or antibiotics that massive cow dairies have come to rely upon to turn a profit.

2) You Can Make A Mistake With Added Ingredients Like Soy & Corn.

The EAS Myoplex adds a soy lecithin extract - an "emulsifier" in many foods and supplements that helps the components mix together more thoroughly. Unfortunately, not only is 91 percent of soy grown in the US genetically modified, but soy contains natural toxins known as “anti-nutrients", a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump together (hemagglutinin), substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones (goitrogens), mineral absorption-blocking phytates, plant based phytoestrogens that may cause infertility and may promote breast cancer in women, and high levels of toxic metals aluminum and manganese. I've found that protein powders without the soy lecithin tend to clump slightly easier, but do just as fine if you put them in a blender or shaker.

The corn maltodextrin in the EAS Myoplex is not present in large amounts, but it's a completely unnecessary added carb from another highly genetically modified source. If you want to have carbs with your protein, just toss in a banana - you'll get the fiber benefit with none of the genetic risks.

3) You Can Make A Mistake By Not Checking the Sweetener.

If you take a look at what is actually used as a sweetener, you'll see that EAS Myoplex uses acesulfame potassium, a derivative of acetoacetic acid that has produced tumors in lab animals, and sucralose, a chlorinated sucrose derivative that has been shown to kill up to 50% of the good bacteria in your gut.

In contrast, Mt. Capra's DEEP30 uses a completely natural and safe root-based sweetener - stevia. Personally, I lived on stuff like EAS for years in college and as a bodybuilder and you don't realize how much you were burping up chemicals and nasty fuzzy-thinking and stomach distress until you quit eating it and switch to something natural.

4) You Can Make A Mistake By Stopping At Just Protein.

When you listen to today's audio episode with Joe Stout, a food scientist at Mt. Capra nutrition, you're going to find out the benefit of going above and beyond just protein. EAS Myoplex stops at protein. DEEP30 also includes electrolytes and a probiotic strain called GanedenBC30, which can literally heal your stomach,</itunes:summary>

~ In my response to Craig, I mention these Gunnar glasses.

Audio Question from Keith:
Wants to know about "Super" Carbs (from an article in UltraRunning by Sunny Blende).

~ In my response, I mention this podcast episode on forefoot running with Danny Abshire.

Matt asks:
I run anywhere from 50 to 75 miles a week and weigh around 200lbs I would like to lose about 25lbs. what is the best way to do that while continuing my current training schedule? Is there a calorie deficit I should try to hit daily that will allow me to lose weight without sacrificing a lot of performance?

Todd asks:
I have been lactose intolerant all my life. I started triathlon recently and thought taking after-workout protein shakes would be a good idea. One problem, most seem to be dairy based. I get a massive headache and GI issues after drinking them. Same issues with fruit juice and now soy milk. Any ideas or suggestions for managing this and incorporating post recovery drinks into my routine?

~ In my response to Todd, I reference this podcast and also recommend probiotics, digestive enzymes, and the new DEEP30 protein or LivingProtein.

Jeff asks:
I am scheduled to have a colonoscopy and in part of preparation the colon must be cleared. So... the day before and the day of the procedure, I am allowed nothing but clear fluids. From a nutritional standpoint, are there specific fluids that would be of greater benefit to me? I am a hard training triathlete and nutritional effects on training are a concern to me. The procedure is on a Wed. I plan Monday to get a solid brick and moderate swim in and then do nothing Tuesday (start clear fluid diet), Wednesday (procedure) and Thursday. Any thoughts on type of fluid intake or preparation prior to and post procedure from a nutritional and exercise perspective.

In this interview about how cell phone companies gamble with your brain, I interview Dr. Devra Davis, author of the book "Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family".

What you'll hear may upset you, and if you get the Disconnect book, the details that you read will absolutely shock you.

But there is something that you can do about cell phone radiation.

Below, you will find an excellent infographic from the Environmental Health Trust organization: I recommend you study it and print it.

I am personally now only using the speaker phone function on my phone, keeping it in airplane mode whenever I am not needing the phone function, and using an airtube headset to minimize cell phone radiation exposure.

Do you have questions? Comments?

Leave them below (but I would recommend you hold back any criticism of these cell phone concerns until after you've taken a look at the book - it took me 5 days to read, and it was well worth my time).

News Flashes:

This is why I worked my left leg a ton when my right knee was injured last month.
Here’s a good reason to work on your running form.
Why VO2 max & lactate testing shouldn’t be used a sole means of testing or tracking performance.

-----------------------------------------------------
Listener Q&A:
Audio Question from Keith:
How do yams stack up against regular potatoes as a fuel during a long run.

Audio Question from Clienda:
What credentials should she look for in a senior personal trainer.

Audio Question from Shawn:
Advice on setting race goals for the coming year.

Audio Question from Matt:
Is interested in how to swap a bike session for a running session (and vice versa).

~ Conversion factors for different cycling speeds: 10MPH=4.2, 15MPH=3.5, 20MPH=2.9, 25MPH=2.3, and 30MPH=1.9. Divide number of miles ridden by the conversion factor for your riding speed to tell you the equivalent miles of running at any speed. So for 20 miles on the bike at 10MPH, divide 20 miles by 4.2 and that results in the equivalent of 4.8 miles of running. This formula is for approximately 155 pounds. A larger cyclist would divide by a slightly higher number and a smaller cyclist, by a slightly lower number.

Question from Jan:
I heard you also play some mean tennis. I used to play competitive juniors and collegiate tennis before I injured my knee. That's when I discovered running (which was my favourite cross training activity back then) and then I eventually moved on to triathlons. I've been getting the itch to pick up my racket again and play a tournament that the company I work for is organizing. I'm a little hesitant to do that since I have already started training for the 2012 tri season. Although my first "A race" is in May (standard distance) and the tennis tournament is in March. What do you think?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Do you ever find your workouts to be stale, non-rewarding, boring, ho-hum, or anything else that is less than exciting?

I may have a solution for you...

...ever hear of "gamification"?

Basically, gamification involves giving game-like incentives to yourself (or someone else) to accomplish something – like using your phone to “check-in” to locations and get points when you shop there, getting a discount from a tax software company when you successfully complete your taxes, or maxing out the progress bar when you complete your profile on a social media platform (like LinkedIn).

Here’s 15 more examples of gamification for those of you who want to read up more on this technique.

And now, gamification has made it’s way into fitness. In this short audio interview, I talk to Benjamin Young, inventor of Nexercise - a fun, free fitness app for busy people – about how he’s made gamification a reality for exercise.

Benjamin originally conceived the idea of Nexercise from his personal frustrations of trying to maintain his weight and squeeze in workouts while simultaneously working, going to school, and raising two children.

In the interview, you’ll learn exactly how Nexercise works, but the basic idea is:

1) You download it.

2) You exercise (and make sure the app is on and you have your phone while you’re exercising).

3) You get medals, bonus points, and rewards for exercising.

The app is free. I’ve tried it a few times, and as long as you’re used to having your phone on you (or nearby) when you’re working out, it’s a great way to:

1) make your workouts more exciting and…

2) get free stuff.

I don't make money from Nexercise or get paid by Nexercise. It's free. I just thought this would be a great tool for you if you need some extra motivation.

If you’ve tried Nexercise, then share your thoughts in the comments section below…and if you like the idea of fitness (or nutrition) apps, then be sure to check out this post: “Top Rated iPod and iPhone Fitness & Nutrition Apps – What Do YOU Think?”

Audio question from McKay:
Gaining muscle and losing fat, specifically using clenbuterol.

~ In my response to McKay, I mention Podcast #145 from BenGreenfieldFitness.

A twofer about Protein from Dylan and Brad:

Ben,
How much protein should you ingest in one "sitting" for optimal uptake? (I know you've discussed protein intake quite a bit on the podcast, and I've tried to search through the posts on your website for an answer but so far haven't been able to run across it.) I've heard, like probably most people, that 30 grams is about all the body can process at one time, but my protein shakes are in the 50-60 gram range. I can't imagine that body just holds on to 30 and then pees out the other 30? But, if I am wasting money by drinking 60 gram shakes, I'd like to know!
Dylan

Hi Ben,
After a recent visit to a sporting store to purchase protein powder, i was
told by staff that i am a hard gainer and should consume a 70:30 ratio of
carbs to protein.</itunes:summary>

As I mention in my Fueling Myths book, glycemic index doesn’t matter before exercise.

Good article about Running Rules You Should Break.

It appears that even just a little intensity in your workout helps more than previously believed.

So...maybe marathon doesn’t suppress immune system...just allergies?

Before you take this as reason to begin “grazing”, notice that it is 3 meals & 2 snacks, not “6-10 a day”.

Listener Q&As:
Audio Question from Patrick:

Does long cardio really burn off muscle?

In my response to Patrick, I mention these amino acids.

Erling Tenvik asks:

The winter is coming, and i was wondering if its bad to do hard outdoor training in cold temperatures (for the lungs). Last year in Oslo (Norway) it was -20 for a long period.

I like the new structure of the podcast :)

In my response to Erling, I reference this podcast with Ray Cronise and Tim Ferris. Brock also mentioned "wind proof undies".

-------------------------

Andrei asks:

Hi Ben,

I heard you a few times talking about soaked and sprouted grains. So what is the proper way to do it? How do you sprout grains, quinoa, etc?

Thank you!

In my response to Andrei, I reference a multi-part video on soaking and sprouting that Jessa Greenfield presented inside the Ben Greenfield Fitness Inner Circle at www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/innercircle and also the cookbook Nourishing Traditions

Ron asks:

What do you think of Dr. Weil's food pyramid?

Listener Q&A:

Raminta has a call-in question about the many negatives of aerobic training, and this article:

http://www.charlespoliquin.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Article/728/The_(Many)_Negatives_of_Aerobic_Training.aspx

Jeff asks: Is a 3 mile "run" on an elliptical machine the fitness equivalent of a 3 mile standard run? For example, say my training plan calls for a 5 mile run (which would typically take me about 40 minutes), would a 40 minute ellipitcal workout be comparable? Also on an elliptical trainer, should I try to replicate my running gait and foot strike as much as possible? I'm more of a heel striker, but find myself using my forefoot more on an elliptical machine.

In my response to Jeff, I mention the Elliptigo.

Scott asks: Based on your advice, I've eliminated artificial sweeteners completely from my diet and am trying to eat more protein in particular. I've paid particular attention to the quality and source of the protein, but this hasn't always been easy and the quality of the source has often been uncertain (I travel extensively for business). Recently, I have developed some bad headaches.</itunes:summary>

In the Podcast Episode #70 on how a mouthpiece could help you exercise better, I learned about interesting fitness tool which was summarized in the Journal of the American Dental Association. I was a bit skeptical about at first. It is actually a “mouthpiece”. You clamp down on it when you’re exercising, such as running, lifting, or riding a bike, and it makes exercising easier.

A study conducted by Dr. Dena Garner, Head of the Department of Heath, Exercise and Sports Science at The Citadel, (who I interview in this podcast, along with a representative from BiteTech Technology) showed that participants wearing a mouthpiece during exercise experienced improvements in their ability to breathe, specifically taking in 29% more oxygen, while expelling 21% more carbon dioxide than the subjects not wearing the mouthpiece. It also appeared that the ArmourTech BiteTech mouthpiece could help to lower lactic acid and cortisol levels.

You can get the ArmourTech BiteTech mouthpiece by clicking here and using FREE shipping code "FITNESS".

Listener Q&A:

A listener has a call-in question about whether marathons are bad for your heart.

In my response, I mention my article "Is Exercise Bad For You?"

John has a call-in question: I've gotten into tri's the last few years, and did my first 70.3 in September (5:37:30). I'm 45 years old, and had a spinal fusion in my L3-5 area about 20 years ago (from a bad accident that left me unable to walk). My question is this: I used to be a lifeguard, and swimming was really fun and easy back in the day...now I have a body drag that is killing my time in the triathlons. Because my spine is now straight, I am unable to "plane" myself in the water, and simply drag myself along. When I use the bouy between my legs, I swim much faster and easier--but when I remove it,</itunes:summary>

Featured Topic: Why Fat Is Good, How We've Been Lied To About The Obesity Epidemic, And How To Be A Fat Head.

Have you seen the news stories about fat in fast food and the obesity epidemic? Did you see Morgan Spurlock's movie "Super Size Me"? Then guess what ... You've been fed a load of bologna.

In this interview, comedian, author and speaker Tom Naughton replies to the Super Size Me crowd by talking about how he lost weight on a fat-laden fast-food diet that included double quarter-pounders and fried chicken. He points out that nearly everything we've been told about obesity and healthy eating is wrong, and why fat is good.

Jeff has a call-in question about how to exhale when swimming.

A listener has a call-in question about cramping in highschool football players.

In my response, I recommend listening to this episode about muscle cramping with David Warden from TriTalk.

Marcy asks: I just started a boot camp class 3 days a week. It's very hard. I'm not sure I've ever sweat that much. It's showing me that I'm not in as good shape as I thought. But I'm hanging in there. Would you say that that is enough resistance training.</itunes:summary>

Christine asks: I like to do HIIT indoor cycling and have noticed that for the first 10 or so minutes, I yawn several times. Can you explain this?

Anne asks: In your Low Carbohydrate Guide for Triathletes book you recommend a low carb lunch, but I assume on days I do weight training just before lunch (2x per week) should I add some healthy starches for lunch?

Dino asks: I just wanted to ask about CLA for cutting weight in prep for a half/full marathon.

JT asks: can i take greens super food powder stuff, instead of eating veggies? I hate vegetables, and need to get my greens somewhere, this sounded like a good option.

In my response to JT I mention: LivingFuel SuperGreens, CapraGreens, and Enerprime.

Matthew asks: What's the best method to determine a realistic healthy weight?

In my response to Matthew, I reference this ideal body weight calculator.

Melanie asks: A friend of mine has started taking some products put out by a company called Zija International. They have some capsules and teas and "energy" powders. These products supposedly promote weight loss and energy. The primary ingredient in most of their products is moringa. I did a bit of research on moringa and supposedly it is a miracle cure for everything. I did not come across any alarming side effects.</itunes:summary>

David has a call in question about whether you can pre-fuel your body with enough carbohydrates prior to a marathon.

In my response to David, I mention the Marathon Dominator training program that I helped design, and also a Power Breathing device.

Tina asks: I've been told by my doctor that I have some bad hip inflammation, and have been asked to stop doing high impact exercises for a month! Prior to this diagnosis, I've had a dull ache in my left hip and sometimes when i walk I hear a clicking , and a dull pain will sometime shoot up to my neck. I've been told by physio this is just muscle sliding over muscle, ...I've also been told it had to do with my core being unstable, tight lower back, etc. ....I've had xrays done, and its not bone related. ...could it be muscle sliding over muscle? Would stretching help? Ice? Heat? I want to get back to my exercising and don't feel I will get a very good workout doing low impact cardio...any suggestions or ideas?

Sarah has a call in question about fat loss for females and Crossfit training.

In my response to Sarah, I mention my Low Carbohydrate Guide for Triathletes.

Emily asks: What are your thoughts on BodyPump? I have had great results with Bodypump, I did it 3 times a week religiously last summer and got into good shape but I know it isn’t the be all and end all and I probably need to also be doing strength training at lower reps/higher weights. I still want to keep doing BodyPump: if I do, what should I do to best complement it?

Megan asks: My question actually has nothing to do with nutrition, but I think you might be able to help me out due to your relationship with Jessa. Basically, my husband is an all-star runner (won Florida State HS competition in the 5K, and is now a 2:31 marathoner), and he got me into running during our first year of college. Now, I'm addicted, and by most standards I've done a great job! I've completed 2 marathons, 16 half marathons, numerous smaller races, 6 Olympic duathlons, and 1 Half Ironman duathlon. BUT ...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>With my recent hectic travel schedule, I've been completely unable to release a podcast!

But instead, I'm bringing you the top seven most popular doctors ever to have appeared on the show. These are, in my opinion, "must-listen" episodes with non-run-of-the-mill medical practitioners. I highly recommend you listen to these episodes, as they form the basis of many of the opinions I express on the show each week!

So in no particular order of importance, here are your top seven guest podcast doctors, and the 17 episodes they've appeared in:

Dr. Roby Mitchell - Dr. Roby Mitchell, aka “Dr. Fitt” , graduated with honors from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas and was selected to be the first medical student in an exchange program with Jinan University Medical School in mainland China. Over years of studying in both China and the United States, Dr. Mitchell has become an authority on nutritional medicine and bio-identical hormone replacement therapies in his own right. He served as a physician for the US Medical Triathlon Society, and even practiced as Chuck Norris’s sparring partner!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Mark Sircus - Dr. Mark Sircus holds the honorary title of doctor of Oriental medicine and was one of the first nationally certified acupuncturists in the United States. For many years he has been researching into the human condition and into the causes of disease. His primary focus in recent years has been the study of environmental toxicity and diseases and he has written many books on the poisons in our environment, our foods, medicines and dental practices. Dr. Sircus is the director of the International Medical Veritas Association (IMVA), which is currently advocating radical changes in orthodox medicine.

You can listen to Dr. Sircus in...

-Episode #45: The Shocking Information About A Compound That Pharmaceutical Companies Really Don’t Want You to Know About.

Dr. Carolyn Dean - As the author of The Magnesium Miracle, Dr. Carolyn Dean is not only a medical doctor, but also a naturopath, herbalist and acupuncturist. She’s authored 16 books including The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health, IBS for Dummies and The Magnesium Miracle. Radio, TV and magazines interview her regularly — including ABC, NBC and CBS. Featured Topic: Are You Exercising Too Hard?

In this week’s interview, I speak with Dr. Phil Maffetone, an endurance expert and someone who developed many of the protocols used today in aerobic training, including the Maffetone Method. Dr. Phil Maffetone is described as “one of the most sought-after endurance coaches in the world.” He entered the endurance sports scene in the late 70’s.

In addition to working with some of the world’s top endurance athletes, Dr. Maffetone has written dozens of books and articles on health, fitness and nutrition, including The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing and In Fitness and In Health.

During our interview, Dr. Maffetone discusses:

-using heart rate variability to track whether you are training too hard

-using aerobic testing to track whether you are training too hard

-what to do if you find out you are training too hard

-how to know if you are overtrained

-and much more!

One tool Dr. Maffetone mentions during our interview, is the ithlete app for measuring heart rate variability.

Dave asks: High intensity interval training is how I would prefer to spend my time working out. My only issue with it seems to be the increased risk of injury...especially with running. How would you suggest keeping the risk of injury low while still going hard?

Scott asks: Have you heard of Whole Body Vibration? Thoughts? Is it safe?

Chuck asks: Last week I had an impedance test done. I'm sure you know what it is, but they connect electric pads to you ankle and wrist and an electric current is sent between. Based on the time it takes, it measures your body fat, water, cell health, and water in your cells. The problem is, I don't recall what each of these measure, but for someone in great shape and very healthy, some of my ranges we low? Can you talk a little about this and why I may be low? Here were my results:

Body fat: 2.9%

Resistance: 404.0 ohms

Reactance (Xc): 37.8 (I don't have the ranges, but I think this was one of the level she told me was low)

Impedance (Z): 406.7 (Impedance (symbol Z) is a measure of the overall opposition of a circuit to current, in other words: how much the circuit impedes the flow of current. It is like resistance, but it also takes into account the effects of capacitance and inductance. Impedance is measured in ohms, symbol)

In this featured topic, I speak with Dr. Jerry Bailey, who practices acupuncture at Lakeside Holistic Health in Coeur D' Alene, Idaho.

Dr. Bailey is an Acupuncturist, Functional Nutritionist and Chiropractic Physician, and has a diverse clinical practice. His focus is on wellness from prenatal to elder care, and covers all aspects of family practice in the holistic realm of the healing arts. Dr. Bailey uses acupuncture, nutritional guidance, functional metabolic testing, blood and hormone testing, herbal medicine, exercise guidance, weight loss management, detoxification and chiropractic to aid the patient in recovery and wellness. Pain management with all these aspects is a specialty within his practice.

Dr. Jerry and I go way beyond a simple discussion of acupuncture, and delve into some amazing things you didn't know could happen to your body during acupuncture.

Patrick has a call-in question about Ramadan, and how to exercise during the Ramadan diet.

Mary asks: I am curious what your opinion is on the HCG diet? Is it hype? Can you still train hard while doing this diet for the 6 weeks recommended to reset your weight.

Susan asks: My 17 yr. old neice & high school track star suffers from a labrum tear. Thus far, PT and cortisone shots haven't helped and she's facing surgery. Timing is the issue. College recruiters have expressed interest in her. If she has surgery now,</itunes:summary>

Rishon has a call in question about whether oats have gluten.

Craig asks: I'm looking for a gluten free cereal that I can just dump in my cereal bowl in the morning. I am adding blueberries and almonds to my cereal now.

Ben has a call-in question about using glucosamine or Capraflex for recovering from an acute injury vs. using for chronic inflammation, and whether glucosamine chondroitin should be used long term.

Christy asks: I just listened to episode 127 where you interviewed Udo Erasmus. What is the temperature where you start to damage saturated fats? Udo mentioned not heating fats to "frying temperatures", but I'm not sure what that means. Is it safer to bake meat, what about boiling it? Is the temperature of boiling water too high? Or steam? I believe the temperature of steam is higher than that of boiling water. I think deep fat fryers work at about 350 degrees, which is baking temperature as well, so is baking as bad as frying?

Here is an oil smoke point chart.

Jenn asks: I have a question about night-time leg cramps.

For the past few weeks, I have been wakened several times a night with extremely painful spasms in my calves (mostly soleus),</itunes:summary>

Featured Topic: Is An 80% Carbohydrate Based Diet Healthy?
Douglas Graham, author of the 80/10/10 Diet, is a lifetime athlete and raw fooder since 1978, and is an advisor to world-class athletes and trainers from around the globe. Dr. Graham has served on the board of governors of the International Association of Professional Natural Hygienists and the board of directors of the American Natural Hygiene Society. He is on the board of advisors of Voice for a Viable Future, Living Light Films, Vegetarian Union of North America, and EarthSave International and serves as nutrition advisor for the magazine Exercise, For Men Only. Dr. Graham is the raw foods and fitness advisor for VegSource.com, the largest vegetarian website on the internet. He taught the Health Educator program at Hippocrates Institute, served as the "source authority" for Harmonious Living, and authors a column for the magazines Get Fresh! and Vibrance (previously known as Living Nutrition).

During our interview, I ask Dr. Graham many questions, including:

What Is The 80/10/10 Diet?

What would a typical day of eating look like for the average person? What about for a highly active individual?

In terms of volume, how much fruit and vegetable must be consumed each day for adequate energy?

Should all the fruits and vegetables be organic, or does that matter?

How do the muscles and brain thrive on such low levels of protein and fat?

How do you respond to critics who say that fructose is a “poison”, or who vilify fructose?

Why wouldn’t you want to cook any foods – don’t some foods become more nutritious with cooking?

What type of nutrients might be missing in this diet, and how are those needs addressed?

---------------------------------------------------------------
Listener Q&A:

====================================== ======================================

Craig has a call-in question about how to determine the macronutrient content of foods.

James asks: Could you recommend something to give a race day boost without affecting the sympathetic response? Or is this exactly what it has to do in order to be a stimulant?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Due to my recent medical emergency, I'm bringing you one of the most popular archived episodes on medicine: my interview with Dr. Todd Schlapfer of Coeur D' Alene Healing Arts.

If you've ever wondered what the difference is between an ND and an MD, what kind of conditions can be addressed with naturopathic medicine, or if physically active individuals can benefit their performance with naturopathy, then you're going to learn a lot in this episode. We cover topics like:

-how active individuals can determine proper dietary protocols via specific types of testing…

-what the optimum nutritional philosophy should include…

-how to enhance recovery and muscle repair with mineral intake…

-why excessive protein intake can be harmful…

-the importance of the right type of fat, and ideal dietary sources…

-how chronic inflammation, an acidic body pH, performance, and health are interrelated…

The physicians that come onto this show, guys like Dr. Todd or Dr. Roby Mitchell or Dr. David Minkoff (all of whom you can search for in the upper right side of this website) and mind-blowingly smart, and I think you'll enjoy this information.

Listener Q&A:

====================================== ======================================

Kristen asks: In one of your podcasts you spoke about beta alanine. Is this safe to take with caffeine know an empty stomach and are its effects on women different than men?

Matthew asks: I have been looking into this machine called a versa climber to help improve my running and cycling. Do you have an opinion about it? Should I just stick to running and cycling?

Joseph asks: My feet are nasty. my wife is on my case to get a pedicure, which i have refused. my latest argument is that the calluses on my feet are protective and if they sand my feet down i will get blisters. even i assume this argument has no merit. on the other hand i see no substantive reason to get one either. are there any good argument for or against getting pedicures (aside from being a man/looking pretty)?

Tony Maldonado asks: Ben, I am an experienced ultra marathoner. At least I like to think I am. I've run a 100 miler, a couple of 100k and seven 50k events. Along with a few marathons. I am a middle of the packer. I am currently training for my first 50 miler on a very familiar very hilly course. I also want to run a flat 20 miler that takes place 1 week before the 50 mile event. I usually have a low mileage run the weekend before an ultra but really want to run this 20 miler and feel I can pull it off. What are you're suggestions or thoughts on this?

In my response to Tony, I reference my article about Lightning Speed Recovery Secrets.

Chris asks: What is your opinion about Phosphatidylserine and its use with endurance athletes?

In my response to Chris, I mention Jarrow phosphatidylserine.

Kathleen asks: Goat's Colostrum seems to be such a good supplement and I want to take it. But, I've had breast cancer and the info. talks about a growth hormone. It is important that I do not raise my estrogen levels. Is this growth hormone something I should stay away from? I am not on any anti-cancer drugs because of their side effects. Also, it says goat's colostrum can raise low blood sugar.</itunes:summary>

Listener Q&A:

====================================== ======================================

Lisa has a call in question about metabolic testing and the respiratory quotient, and whether she can lower her RQ to switch to "mixed fuelds", and what the test costs.

Michael asks: Hi Ben, I am extremely concerned about my blood sugar levels. Last year I had an occupational health physical and they told me my fasted blood sugar levels were elevated at 118. After that I started phasing in healthier food choices and for at least the past 6 months I've been eating very clean, whole, organic foods and spending about 5 hours a week lifting and interval training. I'm about 5'11 and 155lbs and relatively low BF%. I just got my bloodwork from this years physical and my blood sugar was 118 yet again. I thought maybe I should give you some background. I'll eat a banana first thing then hit the gym. I have post workout shake consisting of oats, whey, chia seeds and whole milk and then my morning coffee with whole milk and stevia. Lunch is usually my big meal where I'll usually have something like an egg salad sandwich and a green smoothie. Around 4 I'll have a snack like naan and hummus and dinner usually consists of turkey burgers and maybe some fruit. I supplement with 4,000 iu of vitamin D and 3 tbspns of Udo's oil every day. My HDL was 40, LDL was 62, and my triglycerides were 84 (which are all improvements over last year). Sorry for the long question but I am quite concerned and don't understand. I do eat a whole lot of carbs and was drinking a lot of milk to bulk up. Would a more paleo/zone diet be beneficial to me or could this be something unrelated to my relatively healthy lifestyle?

Josh asks: I've been training for Ironman 70.3 Kansas since December. I started out weighing around 160lbs and am currently at 153lbs. I'm 5ft 10in, in my 20's and have a "cyclist" build (small all over except for my quads). I've been zoning in on my racing weight of 150lbs or slightly below. Just a few days ago after a brick workout in the summer sun I dipped down to 148lbs due to water loss. This is normal for me as I'm a heavy sweater. But today I weighed in at 159lbs after my swim session! How in the world could this be? I eat very healthy and watch my caloric intake. I'm sure some of it is water weight, but 6lbs worth? Whats going on here?

Eric asks: I have a question regarding some I know who's experiencing some creeping weight gain. She is a competitive age grouper in the marathon (sub 3:30) and is a periodic triathlete.</itunes:summary>

What is a good breakfast before a long run?
What about the 3 phases of Gatorade? Should we believe the hype?
Should I eat “real food” or an energy bar before a long run?
Do you have any advice about calorie intake per mile?
Your thoughts on low carb diets?
Have you ever taken the cinnamon challenge?
Can you recommend a diet for building and maintaining lean mass?
Do metabolisms react differently to specific diets?
Are there special requirements for vegetarians during marathon training?
Is losing weight while preparing for a marathon do-able?
How do I lose weight while training when I get so darn hungry?
What are the best foods to eat the night before a long run or marathon? Should runners focus on carbohydrates, protein, or a mix?

Featured Topic: "What Is Crossfit Endurance & Can You Use It For Marathons or Triathlons?"

Brian Mackenzie from Crossfit Endurance is an expert in strength and conditioning for endurance athletes, and is the creator of CrossFit Endurance. He is a Level 3 CrossFit Certified Trainer, and is a Level 3 POSE Certified Running Coach.
Brian has been working in the fitness industry to some degree for the last 20 years. He has an internship program for professional trainers.

Brian has been at the pinnacle of training athletes and clients of all shape, size and ability for the last decade. Starting his training career as a physical therapy assistant and volunteering with adaptive PE programs for stroke victims, he has used the simplest to the most complex of modalities.

Learning how to powerlift at an early age, Brian understood functional movement at the beginning of his career. Moving into the endurance world, he worked with Dr. Romanov (Creator of POSE Method of Running), and learned about running mechanics very early in his career. He has trained professional athletes from a multitude of sports including the NFL, MMA, and AVP, Running, Cycling, Swimming, and Celebrity.

Brian has successfully used CrossFit as the cornerstone of his programming for endurance athletes, while supplementing with sport specific wods. His athletes train sometimes a third of what the norm train with superior results.

Brian has been a competitive Ultra Runner. He competed in Ironman and more than 30 ultra marathons ranging from 50k to 100 miles including the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100.

During our interview, I ask Brian:

-what is crossfit endurance, and how is it different than regular crossfit?
-what principles do you use to guide workout design and programming?
-can you walk us through a sample week of workouts?
-how do you think crossfit endurance compares to the traditional method of triathlon training, and do you think someone could go faster in a triathlon with your method?
-how do you reply to critics who argue that weight training does not benefit endurance athletes?
During the course of the interview, Brian mentions Arthur Lydiard, Percy Cerutty and Peter Coe as additional references of information for Crossfit Endurance.

Featured Topic: "Everything You Need to Know About The Link Between Performance, Fat Loss and Colostrum"

If you've been wondering: is colostrum healthy? what is colostrum? can colostrum help fat loss? can colostrum help performance?, then this interview is for you. In this featured topic, I interview Joe Stout, a food scientist from Mt. Capra nutrition who was interviewed in Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast #16 (digestive enzymes & probiotics) and Podcast #32 (goat’s milk vs. cow’s milk). Joe also traveled to Kona and interviewed me after Ironman World Championships in this video.

During our discussion, Joe answers the following questions:
-what is colostrum?
-how is it harvested and collected?
-traditionally, what are the benefits of colostrum?
-are there dangers in taking it?
-what is the link between colostrum and sports performance?
-what type of people would be finding a benefit of using colostrum?
If you're interested in incorporating colostrum into your diet for fat loss or performance, then click here to view my recommended brand: CapraColostrum.
