Does Food Combining Really Work?

Combine asks: Could you talk a little bit about food combining? Does the combination of macro and micro nutrients we put together really matter in terms of fat gain and muscle gain? Does this change if you are eating before, after or in the absence of a workout?

How To Exercise With A Knee Injury

Scott asks: His mom has been diagnosed with some severe knee damage due to some genetic problems. She is headed for a knee replacement but she wants to get fit. Is there anything she should be doing in particular? Machines, regimens, suggestions? Ideas like using the elliptical instead of running?

In my response I recommend:
How To Exercise With A Knee Injury podcast
MarcPro (use $32 discount code “BEN”)
-Kelly Starrett's “Ready To Run” Book (Voodoo Flossing technique, deep tissue work)
CapraFlex

Why Do You Put Fat In Bulletproof Coffee?

Nick asks: He is wondering if there is any research that shows that the terpenes in Bulletproof Coffee are more bio-available or highly absorbed or if it is the MCT oil in particular that is causing it? Would half-and-half or heavy cream work better or just as well?

In my response I recommend:
Upgraded MCT Oil

How To Jump Farther And Higher

Tyler asks: He is wondering about jumping. Is it a skill that most of us haven't properly learned? Do you have any suggestions, resources or tips for effective jump training for both height and distance? He has one surgically repaired ACL and would like to avoid tearing the other one.

How To Handle More Alcohol

Alex asks: He is wondering how he can safely start drinking again. His problem is that after a sip or two, he is “blitzed”. Doesn't matter if he drinks water or eats before. This has been going on for 10 years. Could the tiny amounts of wine be more harmful to him? How can he learn how to drink?

In my response I recommend:
Activated Charcoal
NoGlo

In your response to the question about food combining, you report that eating carbs in the presence of proteins and/or fats will moderate the body's insulin response below that which would be caused by eating the carbs on its own. Has any study measured the size of this effect? To what degree does eating some cheese with an apple reduce the body's insulin response to the apple, for example? That's the kind of question I'd like to be able to answer, so I'm hoping somebody has documented the results of an investigation into the size of this effect. Thanks in advance!

    1. Glucose enters the small intestine from your stomach, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream to stimulate insulin release. If you are able to slow down how quickly glucose enters the small intestine, you will be able to slow down insulin response. Both proteins and fats stimulate the release of several hormones that slow down the stomach's release of its contents into the small intestine. I'll try to hunt down some studies and post them for you…

Re: the B12, Chris Kresser states you can't get actual B12 from plant foods:

What Everyone (Especially Vegetarians) Should Know About B12 Deficiency (http://chriskresser.com/what-everyone-especially-vegetarians-should-know-about-b12-deficiency)
    by CHRIS KRESSER 362 comments

B12 is the only vitamin that contains a trace element (cobalt), which is why it’s called cobalamin. Cobalamin is produced in the gut of animals. It’s the only vitamin we can’t obtain from plants or sunlight. Plants don’t need B12 so they don’t store it. B12 is found exclusively in animal foods, such as liver, clams, oysters, mussels, fish eggs, octopus, fish, crab and lobster, beef, lamb, cheese and eggs.

A common myth amongst vegetarians and vegans is that it’s possible to get B12 from plant sources like seaweed, fermented soy, spirulina and brewers yeast. But plant foods said to contain B12 actually contain B12 analogs called cobamides that block intake of and increase the need for true B12. (9)

    …so I'm a little confused. :-)

    1. I’d recommend you read the study…it’s pretty straightforward in that respect. You can indeed get B12 from plant foods.

In regards to terpenes, are those still intact in decaffeinated coffee? Or do they get removed during the decaffeination process? I have a whole boat load of Upgraded Decaf laying around (cycled off of stims for a while) and I was curious.

    1. Based on this study on green tea – decaffeination process REDUCES but does not totally remove terpenes: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17995663

      1. joeflah13 says:

        Awesome find, thanks Ben!

Are samsara going to make your custom treadmill available as a product? I assume the key difference is no handle bars?

    1. Just email jvernon at samsarafitness dot com and tell them you want what Ben Greenfield got. I got rails just in case I ever want to put it in a gym, but don't have them attached.
