Hi Ben, the fish oil that I take is the Triple Strength Fish Oil made by GNC. I have seen concentrated versions under other brands as well.

Hi Paulie!

I actually published this post prior to the physician's comments below, so it wasn't an answer, we just happened to post/comment on the same day. I'd be interested to know the brand of fish oil that you take...it sounds pretty good!

I was surprised at your answer here. The studies that have been done which show the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids show that the benefits arise mostly from the long chain Omega-3s EPA and DHA. These fatty acids are not found in flax seed oil, which instead contains a short chain Omega-3 fatty acid ALA. ALA can be converted in the botty to EPA or DHA, but only in very small quanities. Studies have shown that only as little as 5% or less of ALA is converted to DHA in the human body.

I understand your concerns about fish-derived oil, but I think they are misplaced. Fish oil is extraced from mostly small oily bluefish which are plentiful and inexpensive because they are not in great demand as human food. Extracting oil from larger fish such as Tuna or Salmon would be cost prohibative. These bluefish are much lower on the food chain and thus do not have the same levels of contamination from toxins as the larger fish. Moreover, any toxins that are in the fish are removed when the oil is extracted an purified. And for those with concerns about the saturated fat levels in fish oil, there are concentrated versions in which the non-Omega-3 portion of the oil is largely removed. I take a fish oil capsule that contains only 1.5 grams of oil total and .9 grams of that is pure EPA and DHA. Even if all the rest of the oil was saturated (which I doublt) it would be only .6 grams.
